National All-Stars a Real Eye-Opener!
Having just returned from the National All-stars with the Provincial
U-15 girls, I am now more convinced than ever the need to alter how
we approach player development in this province.
Quebec beat our girls 1-0 in the gold medal final but regardless of
the score, it was the technical ability of the Quebec players that
really stood out. In talking with their head coach, who also
serves as Quebec's Technical Director, he explained to me that three
years ago that province made the decision to focus on player
development over winning and today that decision is paying off.
All four Quebec teams (boys and girls, U15 and U16) were in the Gold
medal final with three of their teams winning. This is not a
coincidence!
Some thoughts and observations:
- From U10-U14, the emphasis must be on player development
- Players must be given the tools to play at U10/12
- Competition in U12/14 is actually getting in the way of player
development
- We are currently playing way too many games and not training
enough
- Do we really need club provincials at U12 and nationals at U14?
- When players move from club to club, they currently do so because
they want to play for a winning team. It is about time that
players decide to stay at clubs because they want to develop.
